TomTom Launches Three Fitness Trackers at IFA to Analyze Body Composition

At the recent IFA conference, TomTom announced the launch of three new fitness trackers. The first model, called "TomTom Touch," is a fairly standard wristband type fitness tracker in terms of design, but it can measure the user's body fat and muscle mass, and more common functions such as metering. Steps, sleep tracking, or heart rate monitoring are also all missing. The other two products are Spark's updated models. As TomTom's fitness watch series, it can provide more advanced fitness tracking functions, and equipped with a GPS module.

TomTom Touch looks small and elegant, priced at 129 US dollars (about 862 yuan), scheduled for release on September 8. The product has most of the features that a fitness tracker should have, including touch screen display, heart rate calculations, sleep tracking, step counts, calorie consumption estimates, and some basic notifications from smartphones. Life time is 5 days, waterproof. The body composition analysis function is the highlight of this product.

TomTom achieves these functions through a method called “bioelectrical impedance analysis”, which is also commonly used in various commercially available body composition analysis devices. The Touch estimates the percentage of body fat and muscle mass by the time the signal passes through the user's upper body and then returns to the device. The user needs two skin contact points to use this function, one of which is located at the back of the Touch, while the other needs to place the finger on the silver button of the Touch, which is the one used to wake the screen.

TomTom also prepared some new products for users who are more enthusiastic about fitness. The first is Spark 3, which is based on an updated version of Spark last year, except that it is even cleaner in design. The biggest change is TomTom's addition of GPS tracking and "path exploration" mode. Take the function of “return to the starting point”, the user can always return through navigation after setting a starting point, which is especially useful for users who are trying to explore a new path or are not familiar with the city tour. The other is the trace upload. The user can upload any gpx type file to the watch and use TomTom's GPS function to explore the path.

The top version of Spark 3 is priced at US$249 (approximately RMB1,663) and is scheduled to ship on September 8. It will be equipped with a heart rate sensor, with an internal storage space of 3GB and a battery life of 5 hours to 2 weeks. It does not depend on the user's frequency of use. The last new product is called "Adventurer" and it is essentially an enhanced version of Spark 3, and the built-in barometer can help the product better track running, hiking, skiing and skateboarding.
