STMicroelectronics Announces Multiphase Digital Controller
Improve the power efficiency of servers and data centers
Today's server and data center equipment uses the latest low-voltage, high-current microprocessors and ASICs and field-programming devices. ST's new buck controllers PM6773 and PM6776 meet these applications for more accurate and higher power delivery. Energy efficiency needs. Designed for Intel's Intel Skylake CPU and DDR4 memory modules, these two new ICs are the latest addition to ST's IntelVR13 platform digital buck controller family.
The two VR13 Serial Voltage Identification (SVID) protocol-compatible ICs are 12V input voltage, dual-channel, multi-phase 3+1 ( PM6773 ) and 6+1 ( PM6776 ) step-down controllers that can be parameterized via the PMBusTM protocol. Built-in non-volatile memory (NVM) is used to store configuration data. The PMBus communication interface also supports reporting of parameters such as voltage, current, power consumption, temperature, and error status. In addition, the two chips also integrate a practical black box recording function.
These controllers use ST's high-performance voltage-controlled on-time fixed (STVCOT®) digital control loop technology for fast transient response and low output capacitance, as well as variable frequency diode emulation (VFDE) and dynamic phase management (DPM) ensures that the application is energy efficient under all load conditions. The new controller also integrates comprehensive protection features including load overcurrent protection, undervoltage and overvoltage lock protection, and feedback disconnection protection.
The new buck controller chip PM677x and ST's advanced software tools are available to all designated customers, allowing engineers to speed up the design of the Skylake Vr13 regulator, set and monitor all key parameters including control loop response, load line and On-off level.
The PM6773 and PM6776 are in volume production today, in VFQFPN486x6mm and VFQFPN40 5x5mm packages, packaged and pin-compatible with first-line brand products.
Editor's Note:
STMicroelectronics has all the multiphase digital controller products required for the VR13 Purley-Platform motherboard, including the PM677x family of 12V input voltages and the family of 48V direct power conversion products that power CPUs, DDRs and ASICs.
