Abstract: The DS2431 is an improved, 1k-bit 1-Wire® EEPROM chip used to replace the 256-bit EEPROM DS2430A. This article discusses the differences between the two devices in the command structure and memory map. Points out the matters needing attention when the system is upgraded to the large-capacity DS2431. This application note also explains the important differences between the two devices, especially the DS2430A's application registers and how to use the DS2431's write protection and EPROM emulation mode.
Overview DS2431 is an advanced, 1k bit 1-Wire EEPROM chip used to replace the 256-bit DS2430A. The DS2431 has some differences in command structure and memory map. Applications that need to be updated or upgraded to a larger capacity need to be modified accordingly. Each 1-Wire device has a unique 64-bit ROM identification number. The 64-bit identification number includes a family code common to 8-bit devices. This 8-bit family code confirms different types of devices in the application and realizes seamless transmission between multiple devices.
DS2430A has a 64-bit one-time programming application register, which is controlled by different commands in a separate storage space. DS2431 does not have such a register. In fact, any of its four 32-byte pages can be independently write-protected or set to EPROM emulation mode. In EPROM mode, the state of all bits can only change from logic 1 to logic 0. This feature is useful in systems that need to track product usage.
Both 1-Wire devices are available in TO-92 and TSOC packages and have the same pin functions. DS2431 also provides an additional chip scale (UCSP) package. Table 1 summarizes the basic differences between the command structure and memory map of the two devices.
