Intersil Introduces DSL Line Driver for DSLAM Design

Intersil Corporation (Nasdaq Global Select Market Trading Code: ISIL) today announced the launch of the latest member of the DSL line driver family, ISL1539A, for the rapidly growing VDSL2 ultra-high bit rate Internet connection standard application.

The ISL1539A supports both 8MHz and 17MHz VDSL2 specifications and is compatible with the widely used ADSL2 + standard. The ISL1539A provides a low-power solution in a space-saving package, enabling 24-port and 48-port devices to be densely stacked together. The device has a bandwidth of 240MHz and a differential slew rate greater than 3000V / μs, providing ample design margin for the most demanding line interface design and multi-frequency power ratio (MTPR) goals.

The ISL1539A includes four internal broadband operational amplifiers configured as two pairs of differential line drivers. Each driver is a broadband current feedback amplifier that still has a very high slew rate at low supply currents. Each pair of amplifiers (ports) also includes two logic pins that can adjust the quiescent current level step by step in designs that support multiple DSL standards. In addition, the total power adjustment pin can provide very low static power consumption in less demanding applications. The nominal full power of each port is 27.2mA. Designers can choose from a medium power consumption of 23mA per port, a low power consumption of 13.5mA per port, and a power consumption of less than 0.5mA per port in the off state.

With a bandwidth of 240MHz and low distortion (<-89dBc @ 1MHz, 2Vpp), the ISL1539A can provide MTPR greater than -67dBc for a 100Ω line load of VDSL2 8b specification. The output stage uses a low headroom, high peak current design to support high-power push-pull line driver applications. With a ± 12V power supply, the ISL1539A provides a 1.1V headroom and a peak linear output current greater than 360mA. When doing differential driving in a VDSL2 application circuit, this is equivalent to a 41.8 V peak-to-peak swing on a 100Ω load. The device also supports high spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) operation with power supplies as low as ± 7.5V. The dual-port ISL1539A is suitable for use as a differential pair, and contains special circuitry to minimize the pulse spikes of the common-mode loop while reducing the frequency spectrum of the common-mode output noise.
