Texas Instruments Introduces 1.2A High Brightness Flash LED Driver with Built-in I2C Compatible Interface
Texas Instruments today introduced a TPS61050 LED driver with a high-frequency synchronous boost architecture that features a fixed current draw capability to drive a high-brightness white LED. With a footprint of only 2x1.5x0.625mm, this compact, fixed-frequency pulse-width modulation control architecture uses small external components to reduce the total solution size to less than 25 square millimeters and many applications. Input chopping current is minimized, such as white LED flashing for camera phones, smart phones and PDAs, and other general lighting applications.
The TPS61050 operates from a 2MHz switching frequency with a small, thin 2.2μH inductor. In addition to acting as a regulated current source, this component can also be used as a standard boost regulator to provide power to other system components, such as high-power chips such as audio power amplifiers, or other components with voltage requirements that exceed battery voltage.
The TPS61050 has maximum application flexibility, and its LED current or output voltage can be set via an I2C compatible interface. It also integrates four preset operating modes to make product design easier. To simplify the synchronization of the flash and the camera module, this component provides a trigger pin to allow the LED current to turn on quickly. Designers can also put the idle TPS61050 into shutdown mode through the I2C interface. At this time, the input current will be reduced to 0.3μA, and the LED pins of the component will also enter a high-impedance state to avoid LED current leakage.
