After several months of in-depth investigation and analysis, Samsung Electronics held a press conference in Seoul today, and announced the results of the investigation on the Galaxy Note7 incident with three independent independent research institutions around the world. At the same time, it announced a series of measures to avoid similar events.
DJ Koh, President of Samsung Electronics Wireless Division, introduced the process and results of the survey: "In conclusion, the reason for the loss of Galaxy Note7 is the battery. In order to pursue innovation and design, we set the specifications and standards for the Galaxy Note 7 battery. And the problems in the design and manufacturing of this battery, we failed to find and confirm before the release of Note7, we are very sad and sorry."
DJ Koh further explained at the press conference that in the past few months, Samsung has invested more than 700 engineers and tested 200,000 mobile phones. The A battery recalled for the first time and the B battery recalled for the second time are different. Among them, the battery A is mainly caused by the extrusion of the negative electrode plate, and the battery B is melted due to the copper foil, which indicates that it is the source of the accident.
In the past few months, in order to find out the reasons for the Galaxy Note7 incident, Samsung has carried out detailed investigations. During the investigation, Samsung carefully reviewed the hardware, software, and related processes of the Galaxy Note7, such as assembly, quality inspection, and logistics. In order to reduce the burning process, Samsung used more than 700 company researchers and engineers to build large-scale experimental devices, tested more than 200,000 assembled mobile phones and more than 30,000 batteries, further clarifying the root cause of the problem.
In the past few months, Samsung has invested in more than 700 engineers and tested 200,000 mobile phones. The A battery recalled for the first time and the B battery recalled for the second time are different. Among them, the battery A is mainly caused by the extrusion of the negative electrode plate, and the battery B is a real accident source due to the melting of the copper foil. In addition, some batteries were found not to use insulating tape.
On the other hand, third parties such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Exponent Laboratories, and TUV Rheinland have conducted independent investigations into the possibility of a Note 7 incident.
First, UL conducted the first phase of investigation on ten damaged devices. The survey results show that the reasons for assembly, manufacturing and battery design are both present. Manufacturing reasons include the lack of bumps on the tabs, resulting in internal short circuits; the battery design includes a thinner isolation film, resulting in poor protection. In short, the production and design of the battery led to the explosion of Note 7.
Secondly, in the investigation of the Exponent laboratory, there is a damage to the cathode membrane in the battery of Company A, which is likely to cause damage to the separator and eventually cause fever. Although the battery of Company B does not have the defects of Company A, there are some new problems, such as bending of the electrode plate, etc., so that the cathode plate and the anode plate may come into contact, thereby causing a short circuit. The reason for this is that the bonding of the above-mentioned joint portion is caused by the joining process, thereby causing contact of the electrode plates.
Finally, TUV investigated specific factors related to the battery in the logistics system. The results showed that there were no obvious weaknesses in the Samsung factories in Vietnam and South Korea.
For the Note7 incident, Samsung said it will learn the lesson and develop an "eight-cell battery safety inspection measure" to ensure the battery is safe and reliable. The "8-cell battery safety inspection measures" include safety inspection, battery appearance inspection, X-ray inspection, battery disassembly inspection, TVOC inspection, ΔOCV measurement, charge and discharge inspection, and safety inspection in user use scenarios. At the same time, Samsung also adopted the “Multilayer Security Measures Agreement†during the product planning phase. The improved Multilayer Security Protocol will enforce strict security standards for each part of the equipment, including overall design and materials used, equipment hardware strength and capacity, and improved software algorithms to achieve a safer battery. Charging temperature, charging current and charging duration. In addition, Samsung has set up a team to focus on the development of 12 core components of mobile devices.
