Intel: 22nm Ivy Bridge has started mass production

At the quarterly financial meeting yesterday, Intel publicly confirmed that the next generation of new process 22nm has been officially put into mass production. The 3-D stereo transistor is coming, and Ivy Bridge is coming.

Intel CEO Paul Otellini told analysts: “In the third quarter, we began mass production of Ivy Bridge using the 22nm process. 22nm will set off the curtain of the 3-D transistor era. In the next few generations, (3D transistors) will Plays a key role in power consumption, performance, and density."

According to Intel, the 3-D tri-gate transistor will provide a 37% performance improvement over lower voltages compared to the existing 32-nm process, so at the same performance level, the Ivy Bridge will have both voltage and power consumption. Lower, up to 50%. At the same time, 3-D transistor technology can also improve switching properties, increase drive current, and reduce additional costs (only 2-3%).

Intel also announced through its official blog that 3-D Tri-Gate transistor technology has won the Semiconductor Technology Innovation of the Year Award from the Wall Street Journal, which is also a testament to Intel’s “re-invention of transistors”.

Ivy Bridge will be officially released in March-April 2012.
