According to reports, Samsung Electronics Network Business Director Kim Young-ky recently confidently said that despite the increasingly fierce competition from Chinese rivals, Samsung will become the mainstream 5G equipment supplier.
“Credit is the most important thing in selecting a telecom infrastructure provider. With the purchase of mobile phones, telecom operators cannot pre-test network devices. Without long-term mutual trust, it is difficult to choose a supplier.†Kim Young-ky The World Mobile Communications Conference (MWC) said at a press conference.
“To enter a new market, a company often takes five to ten years to get approval. I think Korean wireless operators will consider these factors and prices,†he said.
In the field of 5G equipment, Huawei is expected to become the biggest threat to Samsung's development. Huawei is currently the world's largest supplier of telecommunications equipment.
In order to achieve the goal of deploying 5G communications by March 2019, the Korean government plans to complete the 5G spectrum auction by June of this year. Due to competitive prices, SK Telecom, Korea Telecom and LG Uplus, the three major operators in Korea, are all interested in Samsung's equipment. SK Telecom and Korea Telecom are long-term partners of Huawei.
Kim Young-ky said: "We have been doing business for ten years in the highly competitive Japanese market. We are very proud of our technology and hope to provide it to the most important Korean market."
Kim Young-ky also said that Samsung hopes to use 5G technology as a stepping stone to develop the company's network business.
"The competition for 5G commercialization is heating up. In order to take the initiative in the upcoming 5G era, it will be crucial to have a variety of 5G-related business models," he said.
At this year's MWC, 5G technology has taken center stage and many companies have demonstrated their capabilities. The industry expects that the data transmission speed of 5G networks will be 100 times faster than the current 4G LTE.
Samsung believes that the 5G era will lead the expansion of smartphone-centric wireless services to other areas, with significant changes, such as in autonomous vehicles, factories, stadiums, and urban infrastructure.
Samsung's 5G fixed line access (FWA) technology has been approved by the US Federal Communications Commission. In addition, the Korean company has been selected to supply commercial 5G fixed line access systems to Verizon, the largest wireless carrier in the United States. By the second half of 2018, Samsung's 5G platform will be deployed in Sacramento, California.
"The partnership with US wireless carriers Verizon and Sprint paved the way for Samsung to expand its presence in the US market," Kim Young-ky said.
