I believe that the Internet of Things will be divided into three phases, which is a 30-year business opportunity.

The first two phases of the Internet of Things are beneficial to Taiwanese manufacturers because they require a lot of hardware.

The first stage is the development period of IoT equipment. At this stage, from sensors to industrial computers, it will develop relatively quickly, but after 2020, the growth rate will begin to slow down. The industrial computer industry is also high growth within five years, but after five years, demand will increase, but prices will fall, just like mobile phones and PCs. This is the first stage of development.

In the second stage, the Internet of Things will enter the platform development period, that is, the hardware starts to connect with the software, providing a more complete service, a bit like cooking instant noodles, not the same as the face, but already eaten. In the future, it will not be the biggest one

The third stage is the highest value of the Internet of Things, which is the stage of complete integration of the Internet of Things and cloud services. If the second stage is instant noodles, then this stage is like opening a restaurant. It can provide the most complete service directly to people. This stage is to make money by service. This stage is not based on hardware. It will be a bigger challenge for our manufacturers. .

What can win at this stage is an expert in this field. Like medical treatment, it is very likely that it will be a hospital, and it is unlikely to be a computer. In the future, there will be three or five large service companies in each field.

The PC has also experienced these three stages, first with hardware, then with Windows, and with the third phase starting with Google and Facebook. But unlike the PC and mobile phones, the Internet of Things is not a winner-take-all business.

In the PC era, Microsoft and Intel took most of the profits; in the era of mobile phones, Apple took most of the profits; but in the Internet of Things era, there may be big companies in every field, but no one should Eat the whole market. Because the Internet of Things era is service-oriented, the Internet of Things era can stimulate market demand, and is a combination of services and software.

Like a company that knows how to use the Internet of Things for the Internet, it may understand traffic and is strong in the automotive field; but in the retail industry, there may be no way to grasp the services of this industry. Not like the PC era, there is only standardized hardware; the software is the same, the program will be very much, and the car will have its own app in the future, and the factory will have its own app.

Another difference in the IoT era is that products are sold to system integrators (SIs) and not directly to end consumers.

Recently, McKinsey has reported that the biggest demand for the Internet of Things is the factory, not the consumer. Because, I may choose to use my mobile phone to open curtains and air conditioners, but this has limited help for me. I don't have to choose this way.

Manufacturers like bottling equipment can be changed to make money for others to provide bottling services, and how much to earn. After the factory and the Internet of Things, its benefits and profit model will be different. The purchase amount of the factory on the Internet of Things will be higher than that of the individual. Therefore, the products of the Internet of Things era are sold to the company and the factory; It will be as much as a mobile phone. The Internet of Things will be based on a small number of different service companies, and hardware manufacturers need to have the ability to manufacture a small number of products.

The advantages of Taiwanese manufacturers in hardware manufacturing will continue in the Internet of Things era. Like in the field of industrial computers, there are fifteen industrial computer companies in Taiwan, accounting for more than half of the world's total. This is not available overseas. Taiwan has fewer sensors in the field, but it is leading in the communications and PC segment.
