Is it coming soon? Details about this 4K version of Apple TV

There are new secrets

We know that Apple's upcoming smart home speaker, HomePod, is actually an iOS system. The version number of the firmware that has already been exported is iOS 11.0.2. Therefore, we can find many new product-related information, not just HomePod. There is also the next generation of iPhone. Developers are therefore eager to discover "treasures" in firmware, and the secrets that Apple is unwilling to disclose at the moment are also being looked for more.

In the HomePod's firmware, we found an outline of the front of the fuselage that resembles a new generation of iPhone, confirming it has no home button and no border design. As the rumors say, the new machine is likely to carry facial recognition features, and this feature supports the most demanding payment verification, and people judge it has a great chance to replace fingerprint recognition.

It is worth mentioning that people can find more than just the iPhone-related news, and even the intelligence about a new generation of Apple TV is included.

Since Apple TV was updated to its fourth generation in 2015, there has been no new movement so far. From the fourth generation, Apple TV ushered in a new era. It is equipped with iOS-based system tvOS, and has become a new platform with an application store. Not just those applications related to television and content, game applications are also the focus of Apple's attention.

What will be the new Apple TV keywords when it comes to the next update? The answer to this question should be 4K.

4K new era

One iOS developer, Guilherme Rambo, who has been digging through HomePod's firmware has recently found new information in the code. It mentions some kind of device that has a "4K HDR" display mode. No matter what you think, this device can only be Apple TV.

Frankly speaking, this is not a surprising new news. As early as February of this year, Bloomberg, which has always been accurate, disclosed that Apple is developing a new Apple TV, codenamed J105. At that time, the source did not disclose more details, only that the new product will support 4K resolution.

In fact, even if there isn’t a single news item related to the new Apple TV, people are convinced that Apple will definitely launch a 4K Apple TV. Since entering 2017, Samsung, Sony, LG, and Panasonic, the television products announced by these major manufacturers have all supported 4K resolutions from the midpoint and above, and only those low-priced TV products with low positioning still use the mainstream 1080p. In other words, we have entered the 4K era.

Since Apple TV has its own tvOS system and application store, this shows that it is already one of the four most well-known Apple platforms and carries Apple's ambitions in one aspect. When TV new products have entered almost the full 4K era today, it is reasonable to say that Apple TV 4 is "not enough." It is unthinkable to continue to insist on 1080p, I am afraid it will reveal that it actually does not pay attention to the Apple TV signal.

Of course, as long as new products are confirmed, people will be happy and expecting, especially those Apple TV users who have already started 4K TV. 4K Blu-ray resources are not as popular yet, but if Apple TV updates the 4K version, then the corresponding online content is definitely available.

HDR can not be less

Just now we said that, apart from 4K, the new Apple TV is likely to support HDR technology. This is not surprising, of course, because now it's definitely HDR if it comes to 4K. HDR can make the picture of the TV more vivid and more detailed, and its higher requirements for information transmission are easier to implement for 4K TVs, naturally becoming the standard for 4K TVs.

From the further exploration of firmware by developer Guilherme Rambo, we can see that the new generation of Apple TV will also support two HDR formats: HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

For now, the HDR10 is the most common HDR format for 4K TV manufacturers because it is open source, more customizable, and does not require licensing fees for this. In contrast, Dolby Vision is a product of Dolby and is not open source. Manufacturers of course have to pay for it.

However, at least in terms of the results presented, Dolby's horizon is better than HDR10 in theory. The HDR metadata in the Dolby Vision format includes information related to scene switching, which means it can optimize colors, contrast, etc. for more scenes, making the picture more accurate and natural. The metadata of HDR10 only includes the global information of the entire video, which is certainly inferior to the specific optimization.

But since the firmware code is written like this, it means that the new Apple TV is supported by both formats, which means that Apple TV can support both HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. This is certainly a good thing. Although HDR10 is now more widely used, it and the Dolby Vision are actually the mainstream HDR format. If Apple TV cannot support both, it is a pity.

As early as Bloomberg broke the news in February, sources stated that the new aircraft may be available for sale in 2017. Considering that the developer found Apple Pencil information in HomePod's iOS 11 firmware, we seem to think that it will indeed debut this year. After all, iOS 11 is the new system this year.

This view is reasonable and reasonable. When it comes to the TV market this year, it is really no one to talk about 4K. Apple really has no reason not to release the 4K version of Apple TV at this time. Considering that there will not be another conference this year after September, the new Apple TV is likely to be officially unveiled with the new iPhone next month.

Apple TV is a TV box after all, mainly content. Since the new product is mainly for 4K, it must have enough 4K content. This need not worry because content providers such as Netflix and Amazon Instant Video have already begun deploying 4K content. In addition, there are also a large number of manufacturers in the world gradually entering the 4K era.

Even if not mentioning the third party, a few days ago, some netizens broke the news that in the purchase records of his iTunes movie, some types of movies actually read “4K, HDR” rather than the general “HD”. So far, iTunes does not provide 4K movies, and this accident is likely to imply that 4K content on the platform will soon come, which can correspond to the release of Apple TV.

Apple TV has added support for 4K, which is arguably a very necessary update, because 4K is now a big trend, so we do not need to worry that Apple will stubbornly stick to the 1080p era. What is worth looking forward to now is that outside of 4K and HDR, will the new Apple TV bring more things?
